Put magic in your romance by adopting an animal

Adopting an animal is an ideal Christmas gift for country lovers who want to give back to the environment but do not have the time or space to keep their own animal.

Dozens of schemes run up and down the country at zoos and animal welfare charities.

Lots of groups look after abandoned or retired horse and ponies that are up for adoption from about £25 a year.

The World Wildlife Fund sponsors some of the better-known schemes – but probably the most romantic is paying out to look after an animal in the local zoo.

The Farm Animal Rescue Society in Warwickshire has 750 pigs, sheep, rams, bulls, cows and ewes and is always seeking more sponsors from £14 a year each. Many animal sanctuaries are always looking for sponsors – and people with some spare time to help look after their animals.

Have a romantic day visiting your animal at a zoo

Local zoo schemes often come with special days and activities for ‘owners’ to meet their animals that make a great romantic day out and the adoptions come at prices to suit every budget.

If you are keen on something more exotic, many small, local zoos like Colchester, Belfast, the Cotswold Wildlife Park and Marwell near Winchester, offer opportunities for sponsorship packages.

For a small outlay, you and your partner can enjoy a day out at a zoo or animal sanctuary combining lots of your favourite things – each other, your common love of animals, time outdoors and walking.

Lots of couples make the day more fun with a picnic or even staying overnight making the most of a weekend away.

Most of the zoo schemes guarantee that all your sponsorship goes towards care of your animal – but don’t forget the larger the animal the more you will have to spend.

After all, a meerkat costs a lot less to look after than a rhino!

Helping protected species

If you want to look in to sponsoring an animal as a gift for your partner, the easiest way to find animal adoptions is to search the term online as no animal adoption web site listing all the different schemes seems to exist.

Adoptions are not limited to the UK.  Other options include sponsoring protected species in the wild and donating to charity for domesticated animals for third world villages.
